Dear all, after the hottest summer on record, we are now starting our next term. During the summer holidays Tigger (yes the runt of last year's litter) had her first brood - 9 gorgeous piglets! They are all doing well, although we do seem to have Tigger no. 2 who is quite a bit smaller....we were worried we would lose her during the first 24 hours, and ended up giving her 'lamb quick start' as we didn't have anything hand for piglets!

We took Tigger, her piglets, our halter trained ewes, Beatrice & Alice, and 3 bantams to a Fete last weekend - they all behaved beautifully, and caused a real stir in the grounds of a beautiful house in the Cotswolds! Tigger managed to kick over her water and make herself a wallow...and of course the piglets all joined in....hopefully that small bit of garden will grow back again!

The lambs have all been weaned, and the ewes are getting ready to be 'flushed' on some lush grass before we put Barnaby the ram out with them again in October. He had to have a quick operation in July as his horns were starting to grow round into the side of his face.......there was a lot of blood when the vet sawed them off (having first given him a pain killer) and i sat astride him to keep him still! They look fine now....and he looks in peak condition.

The ducks seem to have gone off the lay again sadly.....it happened last year - let's hope it's not for so long this time. Hens are laying a bit, but the bantams also seem to have stopped - i think it's the changing weather....

Our funding Appeal is still going strong - we are nearly there, and hope to start work before the end of September, on the entrance to the new site.

We have been running a very successful weekly dementia session, and will be continuing during the Autumn - anyone with dementia (and their carer) is welcome. The sessions are similar to those we do with our students - feeding the animals, planting and picking produce, and having a chat over tea and coffee (with cake of course!)

Yet again technology has got the better of me, and the photos i was hoping to upload still appear to be in my phone....and not in my dropbox as i thought - next time !

Emma Costley-Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15181182608485005224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389188331242196553.post-13840150043214158962018-04-28T07:39:00.001-07:002018-04-28T07:39:39.022-07:00LAMBING'S OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR!I'm afraid the blog has been put aside...with lambing happening it's difficult to keep up with everything else!
We had a very successful lambing - and didn't have to help any of the ewes lamb this year. We had 7 ewe lambs are an awful lot of ram lambs - 18 in total! Most of them have gone down to the bank for some lovely spring grass. We have Alice and Scarlet up at the Care Farm for a few days as we had a new group of students here. They are from Gloucester College Foundation course, and are doing a six week course - looking at different modules of farming and horticulture. It's called the 'CAN DO' project, and we hope it will give the students an idea of other avenues to explore when looking for work.
We are busy planting loads of seeds in the poly tunnel and outside - making the most of the nearly constant rain and little bits of sunshine! We are growing 'plugs' for a local nursery at Miserden, and students planted 7 1/2 dozen Tomato seeds on Wednesday! When they get to about 3 inches tall, they will go back to the nursery to be sold on to customers. Next we will be planting courgettes, cucumbers and runner beans.
We have a boar running with Tigger and Sandy - he's been here for three weeks and i think Tigger looks pregnant already (everyone laughs at me when i say that!)
We will be at the BIG HEALTH CHECK DAY in Gloucester again this year on 22 MAY at OXTALLS TENNIS CENTRE, along with lots of other local groups and exhibitors.

Our expansion Appeal is going from strength to strength - we have raised over £100,000.00 so far.....but we still need more - so if you would like to fund raise for us get in touch!

Emma Costley-Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15181182608485005224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389188331242196553.post-24384882822014674622018-03-06T05:05:00.003-08:002018-03-06T05:05:55.080-08:00SNOW'S GONE.....NEARLY!Hello again - long time no blog!! This term is flying by...and has been exhausting with the next lot of snow that arrived last weekend. We had to resort to taking water up to the pigs on a sledge!!
Sandy and Tigger have moved in together and have settled in very happily. We are now waiting for a boar (a new one so he's not related to Tigger) and hope to run him with the two of them. Piglets for summer with any luck.
The ewes look great and are now being fed twice a day and will be coming back to the farm this week. One stupid ewe managed to get her horn stuck and ripped a whole in her ear.....so much blood!
It's healed up now thankfully.
The wethers (last year's lambs) we sold 7 last month, and have another 9 left. Two of them will be going off to the butchers shortly so will have some lamb for Easter.
We have a beautiful game bantam determined to sit on her eggs so we have put her in the broody box in the poly tunnel, and they should hatch any day....let's hope it doesn't get too cold again. We even had ice in the poly tunnel!
We have been making soup and bread with the students whilst it was SO cold....they thoroughly enjoyed it, and loved having something warming for lunch. Roll on our plans for our expansion - we will then have a whole cookery room to produce / teach students cooking. We have raised over £70,000.00 so far.
We had a group of 15 volunteers from St James Place to plant hedging 'whips' last month....they planted 90 metres of hedging over on the new site - a fantastic feat!
SHE HAS 7 BEAUTIFUL PIGLETS.....and all doing well - so fingers crossed we've got a good mix of boys and girls.

The Cook Book has been launched and is now available from us directly, via the website, or locally from Rendcomb Stores, Made By Bob's and Miserden Nurseries.

i will be taking the Cook Books to North Cerney Village Hall for the School's Christmas Fair next Saturday 2nd December....see you there!

Manny has recovered - not sure exactly what was wrong, but he is sound again now....we think it was a bruised foot. He is very happy in the paddock, and the students go most days to see him and check him over.

Gerry has been busy halter training two ewe lambs from this year's crop of lambs...it's a slow process and some of the lambs take to it quicker than others!

It's nearly Christmas again ....this year's gone way too fast and it's nearly time for our Christmas Lunch! This is always a great occasion for everyone who works and comes to the farm to get together.

This week is the Christmas Spectacular at Cirencester Parish Church on Wednesday 6th December. The Barn Theatre are putting on a fantastic production and we are raising money for the Care Farm, having a stall selling our Christmas Books and cards.

iI i don't blog again - HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all our supporters and friends and see you in the New Year!
Loads of good stuff to report though - so read on....

Term has got off to a flying start, and half term is fast approaching...we have been busy picking produce, replanting salad in the polytunnel and digging up bean beds and getting them ready for the next log of veggies. Our pumpkins look great (although some are quite small) and we are hoping to make pumpkin produce after half term. We had a great morning out last week at FOODWORKS COOKERY SCHOOL in Colesbourne. Emma (chef from Wiggly Worm Charity) led the morning's cooking, teaching some very valuable knife skills, with the onions, leeks and courgettes. The students made leek and potato soup, and courgette and raising muffins - delicious! We took along our own produce, and it was great to see the end results made into edible lunch! It's spurred us on to do some more cooking onsite (with a portable hob) and we are going to make curried parsnip soup next week for lunch!

Beatrice has come on leaps and bounds with the students leading her round the field three days a week - they thoroughly enjoy this activity and we have some wonderful photographs for their folders!

Manny is lame .....😞 so he is in the stable again - we are hoping it's just an infection in his foot, and not laminitis - so we have to poultice his foot for three days and hope that it brings the infection out.

Sandy is looking fantastic, and will need scanning imminently - piglets should be arriving first week of December!

It's our QUIZ on 13 October (see opposite)
we are having an Open Day on Wednesday 10 October
We have been so busy with all the animals and produce we haven't stopped to write blogs...my excuse anyway!

We have made hay in the paddock at the Care Farm, and in Woodmancote where last year's lambs have been this summer. We have over 200 bales but sadly 100 of them are getting rather wet at present....😒

The students and Gerry have been working with some of our wether lambs - halter training them each day. They don't seem as happy about it as last year's Alice though!

Sandy is having a well earned rest up in the woodland after farrowing. We sold 6 of her piglets, and have kept the tiny 'Tigger' who is now a healthy 10 kilos; along with 'Marmalade' who is a huge 20 kilos!! They really are little and large!

Manny relaxing!

The ducks are all thriving, although have slightly gone off the lay recently - we think it may be the constant changes in the weather. The bantams keep going broody, we have 5 chicks with one hen, and another two 'sitting'.

We have moved Manny into the paddock with the four ewes at the Care Farm so he's nearby for visitors. He seems very happy, and has donkeys next door to chat to!

We had a fantastic Open Gardens on 2 July in aid of the Care Farm. A local private garden in North Cerney opened their garden specially - it was a seriously hot afternoon, and we had over 150 people through the gate! We raised £1,500.00 - serving cream teas, selling produce and looking round the gardens.

We had to rush to get the hay bales in on Wednesday before it rained! Everyone mucked in, and thoroughly enjoyed heaving the bales onto the trailer so we could put them to dry in the yard!

We had our end of term celebration lunch yesterday - slow cooked lamb (our own of course!)sausage plaits with delicious salads and puddings - everyone bought something along with them and we all sat together on the decking. we used as much produce as we could from the garden - it was a joyous occasion followed by certificates for all the students. We finished by giving them all a Scrubditch Care Farm cap to take home with them!

Hopefully we will sell most of them at 6 - 8 weeks - some of the boars and gilts are huge already!
Scrubditch Alison went off to the Netherlands and has arrived safely - we got a lovely photo of her today - very exciting to have sold one of our pedigree gilts for breeding.

we have 2 ducklings under a heat lamp - actually we've had them out in the day time in a run but inside at night - they are four weeks old. We also have 2 lots of hens with chicks - 12 chicks in total .....sadly i think quite a few are 'cockerel' looking...not good for increasing our egg production!
Jolly Nice at Frampton Mansell are still selling our duck eggs and bantam eggs - we can only just keep up with production!
The lambing's all finished and on Monday, we took the last 3 ewes and lambs down to the bank to join the rest of the flock. There is loads of grass down there, so we are going to fence off half of it to hopefully get a cut of hay later on in the summer. Total lambs 23, so a good crowd down there!

The two weaners went off before Easter, and we still have some chops, joints and a few packs of sausages left in the freezer. The other gilt is off abroad next week! She is going to the Netherlands to breed!
Sandy is due to farrow within the next couple of weeks and really looks fantastic. We are going to move her back to the nursery on monday in readiness!

Kate has been frantically planting seeds with the students - we will need lots of volunteer pickers later on in the summer ....will be nearly a full time job! Potatoes have been planted out, broad beans are up, and carrot seeds went in today. We have some lovely salad coming up in the poly tunnel (as long as those naughty bantams keep out!)

We bought another 3 laying ducks - Buff Orpingtons - and they have settled straight in, and are laying brilliantly. We are supplying JOLLY NICE with ducks eggs each week, along with our lovely Bantam eggs too. If you haven't been there do call in as it's the most amazing place off the road to Stroud at Frampton Mansell. They do the best burgers too!

Bantams are going broody everywhere, and we managed to put two into little arks and they should be hatching next week. We have also put some duck eggs in the incubator....just to see if we can hatch some ducklings (our track record is not good with the incubator..... but!)
The weather has just about started to improve....thank goodness - the sun should really help.

Our hens are all back in their run, having weeded our fruit cage beautifully, and the nets are off the ducks too.

We are just about to finish term for a short Easter Break, when we will be doing one day of EASTER ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN on THURSDAY 20 APRIL. It's almost fully booked already!

we have started selling duck and bantam eggs to Jolly Nice - their shop is at Frampton Mansell (off the Stroud road) and incredibly busy...we may have to buy a few more ducks to keep up with demand!

The students have been busy with Kate, planting lots of seeds out in the poly tunnel, and some straight out into the raised beds
They all came to Mark's call, and are now very happily settled in the field by the Care Farm, ready for lambing. We have cleared out the yard and are just sorting out / disinfecting all the hurdles ready to make lambing pens up.

Last year's lambs are still very happy in Woodmancote and we will shortly be sending some of the weathers off...for Easter Mutton!

At last after ....time we have managed
to get the topper out of the yard!

Perry has moved on to a happy retirement, not far away. The students were sad to see him go, but he was not able to perform any more, so we had to make a difficult situation. On a brighter note, Sandy who went off to a boar locally, is definitely in pig now. She should be due around 2nd week of May.

We have opened up the poly tunnel doors into the fruit cage for the hens! They were SO PLEASED to be able to scratch around for worms finally, having been shut in for so long. It is still 'wild bird' proof as it is fully netted. They are laying like mad, and some of the bantams are even going broody!

So it's full steam ahead for lambing now......watch this space!Emma Costley-Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15181182608485005224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389188331242196553.post-16566297881718696482017-02-09T07:06:00.001-08:002017-02-09T07:06:23.873-08:00catch up!The hens are still in our polytunnel and wow do they love it - they are laying like mad! The students have been busy health checking them each week; scaly leg treatments, being on the their favourite - they look fantastic, and hopefully we can let them all out again at the end of the month. If not, we are going to organise a tunnel roof between the poly tunnel and the fruit cage, where they can scratch round our soft fruit....saving us too much weeding!

Perry continues to cause us problems - he just doesn't seem to be coming sound enough. We moved him into the yard, in order to keep a better eye on him. He seems very happy there, but still holds up a foot when feeding.....Meanwhile we wait to see if Sandy was properly 'covered' when she went off to a boar near Brinkworth for a holiday! Hopefully the scanner will be able to come within the next two weeks. We still have 3 gilts ready to sell, so are advertising them locally....fingers crossed they will go within the next few weeks too. Then the woodland can have a rest and recover from all this wet weather.

The ewes look fantastic on the bank, and they will soon be coming back for lambing. We are due to bring them back at the end of the month.

The students have a two week break now, but for us....there's still all the animals to feed each day, and training to catch up on and of course the mounds of paperwork!

The students are all back and wrapping up warm (most of them!) and we are all working hard. There's lots to do with the animals. We had the sheep scanner coming last week, so we had to bring all the ewes and Gerrhalt (the magnificent ram we borrowed) back to the farm. They are so good and all came running up to the gate when we called them and we all walked them back across the fields to the farm. They have been up at the farm for a week, and a very successful scanning - 9 sets of twins, 6 singles and two sadly 'barren'....but one is an old ewe anyway. We walked them back to the bank on wednesday - they were thrilled to be back in their favourite field again.

Sandy our favourite sow has been off on holiday for a couple of weeks - she has gone visiting another boar, as sadly our boar, Perry, has had a sore foot, and so was unable to get married this time. She has been having a wonderful time, and we are due to pick her up again tomorrow!
The other pigs are all looking great, and we hope to sell at least two of the 6 month old gilts on shortly.
We have moved all our hens to the end of the poly tunnel due to the avian flu trouble....they love it in there and are laying many more eggs as a result - our salad beds are looking rather bare...but they are doing a great job weeding them!Emma Costley-Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15181182608485005224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389188331242196553.post-31333448108384818032016-12-10T11:01:00.000-08:002016-12-10T11:01:05.791-08:00NEARLY CHRISTMAS!Yet again i am starting the blog with an apology....! We have had such a busy time since i last wrote
and now it's the Christmas Break already

The students finished this week, but we will be seeing most of them again on Monday as we are having our Christmas Lunch at the Village Hall - this is a great occasion and everyone dresses up in a Festive jumper (or hat!)

Back at the Care Farm, the animals are all ok - we still have 3 gilts for sale, and Sandy has moved back in with her boyfriend Perry (just as well as Perry had already broken down the fence and tried to force his way through the gate to her!) Let's hope this time she gets pregnant, as sadly that wasn't the case earlier on - if she is that will mean piglets in March / April time

Gerrhalt has worked his magic on the ewes down on the bank, and most of them have orange bottoms, aside from three that must have cycled the second time, and they have green bottoms!

Our lambs are up in Woodmancote, having a lovely time and being very well looked after by Ron who checks them every day for us

This week, we heard on the news about the threat of Avian Flu so, we have reduced the size of the hen run, and are netting the tops, to try and stop wild birds flying down and eating their food - we are doing the same with the ducks too....we will do this for 30 days, and hopefully this will keep a lid on it - i was on BBC Radio Gloucestershire on Thursday morning at 7.45am discussing our plans!

Our Christmas cards have been selling really well this year - we keep having to order more - do look at the website

Sadly we had to cancel our Christmas Fair at Daglingworth Village Hall this time....for all sorts of reasons, but we will be organising a much better one next year.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS AND SEE YOU IN THE NEW YEAR!

Emma Costley-Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15181182608485005224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389188331242196553.post-40657245224966817592016-10-17T00:48:00.001-07:002016-10-17T00:48:38.271-07:00HALF TERM ALREADY!Yet again....i have been a very poor blogger this last four weeks! We have been so busy....Gerry and i have done three talks this past month - two to WI groups and one in Cirencester to the Ashfcroft Ladies Group. We have now finally got a really good projector (having struggled to show good enough quality photographs before) and it makes such a difference! The talks we do are a really good way of raising our profile, and great fun to do.

We had an article in the local paper looking for volunteers recently, that led to RADIO Gloucestershire ringing and coming to interview us the following week! We went out 'live' two days later....another great profile raiser, and our student Helen, and Volunteer Alan were brilliant!

Hazel's piglets have all been weaned and are ready to sell so we took four of them to the market last week (it costs so much to keep feeding them all) Unfortunately there were a load of really grotty dreadfully thin pigs for sale and so although they made more than any others = they still went for half what we can get for them privately.....a lesson learnt - we will know for next time.

Sandy is pregnant again and is due to farrow the end of November, so we will do some 'moving around' when the students get back to make sure she is in the 'nursery' in plenty of time.

Our veg boxes are nearly finished - we just have some tomatoes, and lovely 'flower sprouts' - a delicious cross between brussel sprouts and kale and pumpkins left....

The poultry have completely gone on strike - the hens aren't laying at all....apparently lots of people are saying the same thing - weather i imagine, but it's not good for our 'produce income'! The ducks are still going strong - but only 3 per day instead of 5 at the moment. I am off to buy some more 'point of lay' hens this week, we may need to rig up a light of some kind in order to make sure they start laying before next year ....!

We had our third quiz on Friday night, run by Neil (father of one of our students) - it was a great success again.....a really fun evening - everyone brings their own food and wine. The questions were very varied again and 'interactive' which keeps everyone interested!

On Saturday i took Christmas Cards and Jam to the Autumn Fair at Beaudesert School - they have chosen us as one of their 'Charities' this year. There was a huge footfall so hopefully they will have raised a lots of money. With any luck it will go to purchasing another second hand portacabin to use for a cookery room....another thing to tick off my '10 year plan'!

we are now on half term for two weeks. as it's such a long term - this gives us time to catch up with lots of maintenance on site, and plan for the next half term. Alan (volunteer) and i are off to pick up 'Gerhallt' a magnificent Wiltshire Horn Ram this week ...watch out girls!

Emma Costley-Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15181182608485005224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389188331242196553.post-29569685366421165322016-09-20T04:12:00.001-07:002016-09-20T04:12:23.252-07:00AUTUMN!firstly, the first weekend in September Gerry Rosie and i went to Moreton Show with our beautiful Pedigree Wiltshire Horn Shearling, Alice - we took Annabel for company too, but only showed Alice
we came a respectable 7th ......out of a class of 9! The judge sadly wanted all the ewes to stand in line, whereas we had spent all summer term, practising walking Alice with the students! She was very well behaved though, and we think we should definitely do more next year!

The students have all started back again, we have said goodbye to three lads, and welcome 3 new students this term. It's all systems go, with Hazel and her 7 piglets; due to be weaned next week, and the lambs nearly ready to go off.

Hazel resting before farrowing!

Hazel has just farrowed - she had 7 lovely piglets - they have been loving the sunshine, but now it's raining we will make sure the heat lamp is on to keep them warm

We have had two more lots of chicks hatch from our lovely dutch bantams, but sadly both our cockerels died during the last month.

The veg garden is brimming with produce; and we have now managed to keep the slugs at bay with copper tape round plastic bottles for the french beans - we have also been going out at night just before it's dark, rounding up the horrid blighters and putting them in buckets with salt and water.....not very kind, but essential as we have been over run with them!

The tomatoes in the poly tunnel are growing well, as are our cucumbers - we should have a bounty of them for September, when the students come back.

This warm wet weather has been a struggle to keep all the livestock healthy,,,,we have suffered with the poultry having lice and mites; cleaning out their housing religiously two or three times a week
And the sheep - a couple of our lambs have been 'fly struck'.....not a pleasant sight - but we have sprayed them both, and brought one back up to the care farm, where we can keep an eye on her, and give her some tlc!

Gerry and Kate have been running school activities over the past week and have 3 more days left this week - we have lots of school age children attending sessions to learn all about farming, and growing produce. They have a wonderful time; and for some it's the only chance they have to be in this environment.
Emma Costley-Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15181182608485005224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389188331242196553.post-69416496730973193802016-07-08T07:41:00.000-07:002016-07-08T07:41:28.042-07:00end of term already! This half term has flown by....i can't believe we had our last day yesterday with the students for the next five weeks or so...although we will be doing summer activities during the holidays for school age children (look on the website for details)

We have had an awful month losing two lambs to pneumonia, and one ewe to a twisted gut - i think it's the weather...so much rain and not enough sun - until this last week or so

We have another bantam hatch 6 hens (she was sitting squashed down between one of the raised beds in the poly tunnel) and we have one sitting on eggs in the middle of the straw stack in the yard!

The lambs look fantastic - and we will be weaning them next month hopefully. we sent off two of last year's lambs last week - they will be delicious mutton as they are over a year old now

We have our end of term lunch next week, where we give out certificates to all the students. Sadly we say good bye to 3 of them this term, but will be welcoming 3 new students in September.

Sandy is looking forward to her 6 piglets being 'weaned' next week - she is getting a bit fed up with them eating her food! They look great and weigh in at around 14 kilos each.....

We have started selling our veg boxes this week - beetroot, chard, potatoes & salad bags with fresh herbs
